Oral Traditions

Tell me a story or tradition your family has passed down to you. Tradition: the passing down of elements of a culture from generation to generation. (American Heritage, 4th edition, 2006).

What is your family story?

How was that story expressed to you?

  2. My great grandfathers name was big rabbit.(or at least it was to me)He got his name from when my aunt was still a child went up to him and said,
"Hey big rabbit!" (at the time was just a name not knowing it would become his nickname for the remainder of his life)and he said,
"Hey little rabbit!"And from that day out my whole family called him Big Rabbit I find it funny that we used to refer to a big tough army man as a cute little rabbit ,but hey you can"t" change history.

My name, Neal, is my mom's maiden name . One of the Neal family traditions is going to Alto Frio Baptist Church Camp. My grandfather, Iven Neal, went to camp there. My mom, Diana Neal Workman, and all of her cousins went and now me and my Neal cousins go to camp there. I have been to Alto Frio for the past three summers.

We go there with Pearsall First Baptist Church. We ride the bus the whole three hours there. When we get there, we first have to unpack. Then, we go take our swim test. If you pass, you get a yellow wrist band and you can swim in the river. If you fail, you get a green wrist band and can only swim in the shallow end of the pool. My cousin, Carson and I always get a yellow wrist band so, we always go get in the river! Then we go get dressed and go to the church service. After church, we go eat dinner and then go to bed. I am going to send my kids to Alto Frio Baptist Church Camp, too!

    My Family's Tradition
My family's tradition is ones a year or each time someone has a birthday. When ever someone has a birthday party we prepare everything a day before. Many of the kids help the parents, like cooking, getting the tables and chairs.

The most likely food they would make are tamales. But we also buy or make a cake. In a birthday party we always get a pinata so the kids could brake it and a bunch of candy comes out. At the end we start eating cake and the tamales. Some of the parties we rent a moonwalk.

What i like about birthday parties are the foods they cook.and that's my families tradition.

  5. One of the most important traditions in my family is in my last name.

    Let me explain.

My Great great great grandfather – José Antonio De la Peña Peña y Pedraza, born and raised in Spain was brought up to always be a man of great responsibility, character, and pride.
In one of his trips to Cuba, he purchased an amazing hand woven cigar case. He was so impressed by the craftsmanship of the piece that I think he compared it to the family values that were so important to him.
He decided then to choose one of his children to receive the cigar case as a symbol of recognition for honoring and respecting the family’s name. This child would have children of his own and he would continue the tradition of passing on the heirloom.
The interesting thing about this is that José Antonio De la Peña Peña y Pedraza gave the cigar case to his second son, Manuel Antonio De la Peña y Guerra. Then Manuel Antonio gave it to his first son, Gabriel Angel De la Peña y Ruíz, who was my Great grandfather.
My grandfather Victor Manuel De la Peña Curiel was the youngest son and he received the heirloom. Then something happened, he never had a son. He only had two girls! So, he couldn’t give the heirloom for the first time in many years. What a mess!
Few years passed and my aunt got married and got pregnant with twins. Thank God. Two beautiful GIRLS!
My grandfather like my Great great great grandfather was a man of great responsibility, character, and pride. Although he didn’t seem to have a son to pass on the heirloom, he felt he had raised his daughters with a great sense of respect for the values of the family name.

On February 21, 2000 at 12:56 AM grandpa got a phone call. His grandson was healthy and as happy as he could be.

My mom keeps my heirloom locked-up in the safe.

  6. When i was born my mom gave me a little blanket that has been in the family for many, many, many, generations. My great graet great great great granmother had it first but the tradition is to give it to the youngest girl in the family. Pretty soon I will have to give it away. But this blanket is so important to our family that we dont even use it we dont want it to get dirty or anything because it was done by hand by my great great great great great grandmother.

The school with the most traditions is A&M. Most of my family went to A&M. How most of it started is that my great-grandfather was a professor of agriculture at A&M. Later on he became a dean of agriculture. My grandmother tells me story's about him leading lots of students to success.

One story that's been passed down Generation to Genaration,And this is it: my great-grandfather was a field adviser when they built the astrodome, he was the one that told them that real grass would not grow (there wasn't enough sunlight for it to grow)and to use fake grass. After that AstroTurf was invented.

My family tradition is to walk the river walk every Christmas eve. Our tradition is usually to walk the river walk and tell stories about when we were young or about other christmas eve's. But a lot of the time we just find our selves gazing at the beautiful lights hanging from the gorgeous trees or staring at the water an watching the lights glow from there. At the end of the night our parents bring us a small present for us to open, but just one only.

Our family has a wonderful tradition that has been passed down to me. Our family lives close to the gulf coast. Every memorial day weekend our family goes to the beach. We go with many friends and family. It is a great family time. We look forward to it each year. It is a part of our culture because the beach is so near our home.

This tradition started with my mom side of the family. They always lived close to a beach both in Virginia Beach, Miami Florida, and Panama. They often spent family time at the beach. She wanted us to share this experience as she did as a child. The waves, the salty water and the sand.

My favorite part of the whole trip is digging in the sand. I learned how to dig from my dad when I was six years old. The more I practiced the deeper I got. We use the hole to build a fire when night falls. We make s'mores and play music. That's my favorite tradition and I love it.

Our family tradition revolves around Military memories. My Grandpa invites soldiers that are serving our country and are away from their families for Thanksgiving dinner every year. We bring them into our home and serve them a great Thanksgiving meal and enjoy great stories.

My Grandpa shared the reason why he does this every year. He was in the Air Force and was very young and away from his family so a family invited him over for dinner and treated him so kindly and always wanted to do the same for others. I love this tradition and hope it continues forever.

  11. Celebrate life! That is my family tradition. We love our Birthdays, because we always stay together, and make a traditional Brazilian sweet called brigadeiro (bree-ga-dei-ro), the table is always filled with them, other sweets, and the cake. It is a lot of work to make them, so the night before, my family stays together for hours preparing them. The day of the party we cook appetizers, and get ready to spend a wonderful time with family, and friends. Adults and kids stay together. The fun part of it is that we can only eat the sweets after we sing happy birthday, which is at the end of the party. My friends really enjoy the sweets at our parties.
By the way, next week is my mother's birthday, and my grandmother is here visiting us, she lives in Brazil, so she brought some specialties, and is planning to make a lot of brigadeiros. Would you like one?
